If your employer provides a group health insurance plan, you probably know that there is usually a designated time each year to sign up. This is called the open enrollment period. But what happens if life changes suddenly and you need coverage outside of that window?

Fortunately, certain life events allow you to enroll in your group plan during what is known as a Special Enrollment Period. This is an important protection for individuals and families who face unexpected changes.

When Can You Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?

Here are some of the most common situations where you may be able to sign up for health insurance outside of the usual enrollment timeframe.

Loss of Other Coverage

If you previously turned down your employer’s health insurance because you had other coverage, you might be allowed to enroll later if that coverage ends. This applies whether the other plan was through a spouse’s employer, an individual policy, or another source. You can also qualify if an employer stops contributing to your existing coverage.

To take advantage of this opportunity, you must request enrollment within 30 days from the date your other coverage ends or when contributions stop.

New Family Members

Getting married or welcoming a new child into your home also opens a Special Enrollment Period. This includes situations such as:

  • Marriage
  • Birth of a child
  • Adoption
  • Placement of a child for adoption

You must notify your plan and complete the necessary enrollment steps within 30 days of the event.

Medicaid or CHIP Changes

If you or your dependents are covered under Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and lose that coverage, you may be able to enroll in your group plan. This also applies if you or your dependents become newly eligible for financial assistance through Medicaid or CHIP that can help pay for your group plan.

In either case, you must request enrollment within 60 days of the change in your eligibility.

Act Fast to Protect Your Coverage

Special Enrollment Periods are time-sensitive. Missing the window could result in a long wait for coverage, which could leave you and your family without access to important healthcare services. If any of the above events occur, notify your HR department or benefits administrator as soon as possible and submit the required forms promptly.
